What is Pilates?

The human body was designed to move. Yes, there are times when we need to put our feet up and rest, but our modern, largely sedentary lifestyle means that we are inactive for far too long. Our bones and muscles start to weaken making us more prone to injury when we do exert ourselves. The good news is that Pilates can address and prevent many modern ailments and is routinely prescribed by physiotherapists, osteopaths and other medical professionals.

What happens in one of Sarah’s Pilates classes?

Exercises involving the whole body are performed on a mat. Foam rollers are used for fascia release, muscular tightness and trigger point work; stability balls to improve proprioception (sense of joint position without having to look) and aid in lower back release; pilates hoops and poles to promote postural alignment and core stability. With emphasis on the use of the abdominals, lower back, hips and thighs, Sarah’s Pilates classes aim to improve posture, muscle tone and balance, while bringing stress relief and a sense of overall relaxation. Each session ends with breathing and meditation to calm the mind and help manage stress.

“Pilates is a unique form of exercise that works in harmony with the body’s anatomy. The precise, controlled movements make the exercises extremely safe for everyone. My classes bring great results – and we have a few laughs along the way.”

“A great class – I can still feel it doing me good the next morning. Recommended!”

Is Pilates suitable for a complete beginner?

It’s a common misconception that Pilates is only for serious athletes or professional dancers when in fact, everyone of any age can benefit from this unique approach to strengthening the body. The beauty of Pilates is that it can be adapted to provide gentle strength training and stability or a more challenging workout for more advanced athletes.

“My classes are a real mix of abilities – with a maximum of 10 per class, I can focus on each person’s needs, and ensure that everyone is working at level that is appropriate to their body.”

“I have recently started attending Sarah’s Pilates class on Saturdays and I love it:) I always feel re-energised for hours afterwards and I know that I have had a great workout. Before starting this class, I was a Pilates novice, but now I couldn’t imagine not doing it.”
